An interesting discovery… I consume(d) way too much salt.

I’m doing a little experiment with my eating. I’m not quite prepared to delve into all the details this evening but in the next few days I’ll pull the curtain back on my larger game plan. In the meantime, I’m four days in to eating a whole hell of a lot better and one simple statistic jumped out at me last night.

Those that know me know that I love technology and I have always played with the latest health gadgets. One item that I’ve liked in my war on eating and trying to get healthier is the LoseIt! app. It allows you to keep track of your food and it help you understand the make-up of what you are eating. It makes it easy since the app has a built-in bar code scanner that finds the food, automagically adds all the calories, nutrients, etc. and all I have to do is put in the correct portion size.

That said, I had a solid three month streak of logging my intake everyday until I fell off the wagon in late March. I tried to get back on the wagon in early May but it wasn’t until this week that I had my own little epiphany. As I said, that’s a story for another post. Anyway, take a peek at what caused my jaw to drop when I decided to really cut out the crap, ate healthy and surprisingly, ate almost exactly the same amount of calories as before.

I’m headed in the right direction as far as cutting down my salt intake.

This is a screen shot of my sodium intake for the last three months. I was shocked to see that the total sodium intake for the first three days of this week combined actually added up to just one of my typical days prior to this change. Earlier in the year I set a goal of trying to keep the total sodium intake each day below 2,300mg per something I read but I like where I’m headed now. I know this is an early trend but if I can keep this up, I’m bound to see some positive changes coming down the pike. Stay tuned…

We’re back!

It’s been a while since I did anything with the mikolay.com domain. When I went to install WordPress today I noticed that my last post was from 2010 and the theme I used was copyrighted 2008.

I’m not 100% sure where this all may go and how often I can get something posted but I hope that creative folks like my Mom (Carol Mikolay), brothers Chris and Justin and any of the other Mikolay clan originally from Hudson, Ohio will stop in and provide you with some entertainment from time to time.

As they often say in my business, sit back, relax and enjoy! (Sorry, I have no way to provide you with free drinks and/or peanuts but by the time I probably update the theme of this website once again, Smell-O-Vision better be a reality!)
